Equipment does not a photographer make, but like a great cook, we all still need our tools. For those of you interested in getting into photography, I only have one piece of advice when it comes to what equipment to buy: Learn how to take good photos first, and buy what you can afford and trade up later. You can buy the most expensive cameras in the world but if you don’t understand the basics of lighting, the relationship between aperture and shutter speed, how to focus and compose, the camera is not going to make a big difference for you.

What I usually carry:

2 Nikon D700 cameras
Nikon 50mm f/1.8 D lens
Nikon 85mm f/1.8 D lens
Nikon 24mm-70mm f/2.8 lens
Nikon 60mm f/2.8D lens
SB-900 flashes

Wish list:

Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 lens
Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 lens
Nikon 50mm f/1.4 lens
Nikon 24mm f/1.4 lens

July 25, 2009 - 7:23 am Samuel Lipoff - I've heard only great things about the Panasonic LX3 and it would be nice to have a small(er) camera with good image quality to carry around. It's probably not much smaller or lighter than the Micro-Nikkor 60/2.8 (or the older MF 55/2.8) and certainly more expensive. However, there may be an even cheaper, smaller and lighter way to get macro shots of things like the wedding ring. Have you considered using an extension tube? Kenko/Prophoto make AF extension tubes, and a 12mm or 25mm tube will turn your 50/1.8 into a macro lens. The rings are small and cheap, and if you don't mind MF only there are even less expensive ones.
