@Sam Good point actually, I DID think about getting an extension tube recently, because I remembered I had a set back at home and forgot about them... Will probably get those instead!

I've heard only great things about the Panasonic LX3 and it would be nice to have a small(er) camera with good image quality to carry around. It's probably not much smaller or lighter than the Micro-Nikkor 60/2.8 (or the older MF 55/2.8) and certainly more expensive.

However, there may be an even cheaper, smaller and lighter way to get macro shots of things like the wedding ring. Have you considered using an extension tube? Kenko/Prophoto make AF extension tubes, and a 12mm or 25mm tube will turn your 50/1.8 into a macro lens. The rings are small and cheap, and if you don't mind MF only there are even less expensive ones.
