Bena and Ruoshi have this respect for each other that I think runs deep. They are young, but they are very wise!

And they’re also playful at the same time!

When asked what made them work well as a couple, they emphasized simplicity, compatibility, and similar faiths and cultural backgrounds

We also had some portraits by the Charles river, which was where Ruoshi proposed

Here are Rebecca’s Stuart Weitzman shoes and Pronovias wedding gown. My favorite part about the wedding gown is probably the scalloped neckline, it fits perfectly with the ocean-side venue

This was one of the flower girls, her mom is one of the bridesmaids. This was her second time as a flower girl, so she’s all seasoned now!

There was dancing to be had at this wedding! First up, this is a very sweet photo of Naimish’s sister dancing with their father. She was married 5 years ago on the same weekend

I really have to hand it to DJ Yogi with Boston Light and Sound – they really rocked the dance floor with a mixture of top 40 beats and Indian music! I was raving about them the next day to all my friends. Heck, forget the fact that I’m Chinese, if I were getting married I’d want Indian music at my wedding reception!

Details roundup! Most prominent about their wedding was the repeating motif of their initials – it was on the programs, menu cards, water bottle labels, the backs of their dinner chairs, and their cake!

One of the first things I saw upon arriving at the OceanCliff resort in Newport, Rhode Island, was their ceremony with the mandap. It’s so colorful!

Several people were on hand to help the ladies into their saris

This is the back of one of the bridesmaids’ sari. Tracy picked it out herself. It’s so gorgeous!

Then it was time for the barat, where the groom comes to greet the bride’s parents on a white horse! There is a lot of dancing and lively drumming

Amit, the drummer, said that he rarely got a photo of himself at a wedding, so here’s one for you!

It’s so awesome seeing everyone really get into the dancing!

A Hindu wedding ceremony is rich with many rituals, each with their own purpose and meaning. I really appreciated the fact that the priests and the programs explained everything

At the end they asked all married couples to participate by having the husbands place their hands over their wives’ hearts. I thought it was really sweet

I arrived via the Provincetown ferry in the morning. There was threat of thunderstorms all day, so at the last minute we decided to move the portraits up to avoid most of the rain. In the end we were so glad we did so

Linda did not want a typical wedding dress. She took five visits to the store and this very dress caught her eye every time. It’s a beautiful dress from Aidan Mattox

We did the First Look on the lot right outside the house. It was drizzling at that point, but the lighting was beautiful and I don’t think Linda and Daniel noticed

The dominant colors of the wedding were yellow and gray. I love it when it shows up on the feet! Linda’s shoes were from Stuart Weitzman

Linda did all the floral arrangements with flowers supplied by Whole Foods. Amazing, right? You’ll see more of it later on!

It was truly sheer luck that the field across from the house had yellow flowers to match

At the very last minute the rain cleared and we were able to have the ceremony outside. Linda and Daniel constructed their very own chuppah using bamboo and draped cloth. It was gorgeous! One of Dan’s best friends, Luc, officiated while both mothers as well as Dan’s sister gave readings

The advantage of a small wedding? I can get a shot of everyone!

We quickly drove out to Race Point Beach for a couple more photos – this is where Daniel proposed to Linda

And then the rain began and it rained for the rest of the night. It’s okay, because everything else was indoors =)

In true New England style, Linda and Daniel had lobsters for dinner. Their bibs are so cute!

They played the shoe game. Apparently Linda is more likely to spend more money

Guests danced in the foyer of the house. There was an anniversary dance

This couple had been married the longest. Congratulations!

And the details roundup! To answer some questions some readers, photographers, and prospective clients might have – why do I capture details? I usually capture details that are important to the bride and groom. Not all my weddings are the same and certainly not all of them have as much a focus on details or portraits, the wedding day schedule is built to emphasize the kind of photography that the client prefers, and the majority of the images I deliver continue to be in the photojournalistic wedding photography style, because a wedding is nothing without the people.

However, for the weddings that do have a lot of details, I know that these details have taken the bride and groom a lot of time and commitment, so it’s important that they’re captured to fully tell the story of the day, even though these are not going to be the photos that get enlarged. In some ways I see the style and detail of a wedding almost like art – it reflects the fashion of the time, the personalities of the bride and groom, and pulls together the look. In addition, several of my clients often use these inspiration boards for their own wedding planning!

First up, the paper! Linda used a typewriter to type up all the paper for the wedding and carved her own rose-shaped stamp that is a repeating motif in the design

Luci chose this beautiful plum-colored gown from Clair La Faye and I adore the hair fascinator she had, too. It is stunning on her!

Luci and Owen opted to have their portraits done all prior to the ceremony. We walked all around Harvard Yard and took plenty of time to relax, have fun, and laugh!

The light was so good that day! Also, Luci DIYed all her flowers. It was the perfect season for peonies and billy balls

This was a great moment during the ceremony when the officiant had them examine each others’ hands and said some beautiful words along with it

We had some fun time doing the family portraits! I know I don’t show a lot of family wedding photos on this blog, but yes, I typically spend about 20 – 30 minutes on them during most weddings as most people request them. As much as I capture in a photojournalistic style, documenting, in a more traditional manner, the families who are there, is very important, too

The dinner reception consisted of delicious food, fun toasts where Luci and Owen introduced everyone, and a game where guests had to guess in which years these old photographs were taken

Details round-up! And this wedding was nothing but short of stylish. Applause also to the staff at Harvard Faculty Club for being so professional in setting everything up

Row 1: This is one of the most fun wedding guestbooks I’ve seen! The two dolls on the right represented Luci and Owen, and on each spread they were photographed doing something that Luci and Owen loved, such as eating Japanese food. I believe Luci’s sisters put this together for them

Fun fact – just a couple of days after the wedding I ran into Luci and Owen while walking around downtown Boston! Thank you for letting me there as part of your beautiful day and thank you for your warm friendship. Your friends respect you guys a lot, as do I, and I wish you nothing but the best!

I fell head over heels for Diana’s birdcage veil which is adorned with a fabric and feather flower fascinator. It really completed her modern look! Her dress was a Jasmine from Camilla’s Bridal

Diana and her bridesmaids got ready in a room at the MIT Faculty Club. There were large windows and the light streaming through was just perfect

Also, Carolina and her team, From Hair to Eternity, another one of my favorites, provided the makeup and hair for the bride and bridemaids.  Carolina, you’re so wonderful!

The bridesmaids wore cute dark blue strapless dresses with a bubble hem, all from Zara!

We did all the portraits (First Look, family, wedding party, ones of just the bride and groom) before the wedding ceremony – and it gave Diana and Greg ample time to spend with their guests during cocktail hour. I really encourage everyone to try to get as many portraits done before as possible if you value having more time with your guests – including a First Look

The next two photos are extra sweet as they are with the respective grandmothers.

Greg’s grandmother loved the kiss so much she said, “Do it again!”

The bridal party was energetic and up to my crazy antics. It was boiling hot that day so I was definitely trying to get them inside as soon as possible!

We took photos all around the MIT campus. I love this campus. Diana is currently a Ph.D. student there

The ceremony was held at the MIT Faculty Club as well, officiated by a preferred vendor of mine, Jean Ellis-La Bossiere! I think it’s really cool that Greg is walked down by his parents

Uncles from both sides participated as well – Diana’s uncle gave a reading in Slovak (Diana is Slovak), and Greg’s uncle sang in German (Greg is German)

The professionals who were at the MIT Faculty Club were really quite amazing. Nina, thank you for being so on top of things and making everything run so smoothly!

During cocktail hour, there was a really great display at the escort card table – two large photo trees showing photos from Diana and Greg’s younger years. Everyone particular got a kick out of the one where Greg looked like John Lennon

This is the gorgeous view of the Boston skyline from the reception room. This is why I love this town so much

The staff at the MIT Faculty Club and Orchids N’ Blooms set up this jaw-dropping reception. The table linen is sheer with navy blue swirls to match the white and navy blue wedding colors

And here’s the dip during the first dance!

Diana and Greg and her families were endlessly fun, I did not want to leave the wedding!

I turned off the flash for this picture to show the amazingness that is the couple behind RC Uplighting, my new friends! The colors went from amber to blue during the night and really adds a whole level of modern color to the reception

Diana’s parents showed some very lively Slovak dancing!

The ringbearer was a bundle of exploding energy

Mike Gent of Murray Hill Talent DJed the event. I thought his tall and thin speakers were really cool, you can barely see them!

The reception went on with a mixture of lively American AND Slovak music. I love multi-cultural experiences!

The guests also got to enjoy a dessert buffet of Slovak treats

First off, I had two weddings that weekend, and Carolina of From Hair to Eternity was on hand to transform my brides and bridesmaids at both. Her handiwork will show up on a couple more weddings and shoots later this year with me! She just gets everyone and brings out their best no matter what ethnicity, facial shape, hair texture. She works punctually, and she is so nice to be around!
That’s why she’s a preferred vendor!

At the same time, my second shooter Tammy captured Jason getting suited up and tying ties for his groomsmen

I. Love. Mary’s red wedding qipao. It is gorgeous in every way and so incredibly detailed and fit her perfectly

As is in Chinese tradition (and also common with Korean and Vietnamese.. heck, many Asian weddings), Mary’s bridesmaids had door games for Jason to pass. He first tried to bribe using red envelopes

Unfortunately that didn’t work. So he and his groomsmen got down on their hands to do pushups while singing a love song

And then Jason had to guess whose hands were Mary’s. It wasn’t easy!

The tea ceremony got really emotional

Then we headed to Henderson House. Mary’s dress from Berkachi Bridal is a dream in lace, so pretty!

Dealing with that day’s weather was quite a challenge, we were plagued by intermittent thunderstorms all day long, so we moved the First Look (and the ceremony)  indoors. Look at how cute they are!

Then the weather cleared for some wedding party portraits

Then we did some quick photos of Mary and Jason as it started raining

And then a couple of portraits against this gorgeous window

They laughed a lot during the ceremony. Sounds like a great start to marriage to me! Jason’s sister Stacie officiated

Meanwhile, the dining room was set up with the handiwork of Lyndsey Loring Design, who did all the floral work!

And then a surprise for everyone – LION DANCERS! Yes, Mary had lion dancers perform for everyone

There were some pretty cute kids at the wedding – niece and nephew of Jason’s. As a special treat, they played a song to see if they’d dance

And during the dinner, the guests got the parents to kiss as well

The following shows my view and Tammy’s view . And nah, I don’t always go this extreme, I want to make sure no one steps on me first =)

When Michael Jackson’s Thriller came out, Mary’s dad showed off his moves (thank you, Nu-Image, for the music!)

Out of nowhere a group of people hoisted Jason and Mary up on the chiavari chairs

And remember what I said about details? SOOO MANY that I’ve created four inspiration boards!!!

First off, there is this amazing brain-melting dessert spread. If I liked sweets (I’m more a salty food person) I don’t think I’d be able to get back to work after photographing this
What I really like about the details in this following board is how much thought Mary put into them to really reflect her and Jason’s personalities.

Last year I imagined my life headed towards an engagement to my first love of nearly three years, business school in Boston, and then settling into life in my condo, working in Boston. God has a funny way of changing my life, and did it change! Now,  I’m single. I’m going to business school at UChicago Booth. I still have Shang Chen Photography and my condo, though they can be taken away at any time, too. Transitioning to this new life has been a bit of kicking and screaming, a bit of resignation, a bit of peace, and a lot of growing pains, loneliness, and tears. It was hard to do this on my own, living by myself, my best friends all out of state, no family in the States (parents are in China until December), and two jobs to answer to. However, I know that it was necessary change so that my life will eventually be better.

I’m your typical overachiever, where busy is the norm and my brain does not shut off. I achieved because I believed that it was where God wanted me. From K – 5 I moved 6 times through 3 different countries and was near the top of my class. In middle school I was voted most likely to succeed. In high school I was all about being the yearbook editor-in-chief and a classical pianist. I got into Harvard for college. At Harvard, I held great internships and was a leader in extracurriculars that mattered to me. By senior fall I landed my dream job of being a consultant. Then I got into UChicago. For each of those achievements I’ve also had more failures and setbacks, but I think that holds true for most people. Starting today, I’m going to really focus on choices that not only give me professional success, but also a chance at having a joyful and fulfilling personal life.

If you ask me where I’m going to be in 5 years, or even next year, I don’t know (except your weddings!). I do know what is important to me now. If I can get those important things to align in my life, then everything else will find its place. If I can’t, at least I tried?

Uncertainty and insecurity are two different things. Uncertainty can feel insecure, but there are ways to be secure in uncertainty, and I am the latter.
Oh yes, I’m scared too! I’m scared I won’t figure things out. I’m scared I’m not going to move on and become a better person. I’m scared I’m not going to get married for a long time. However, I will not let my fear and uncertainty paralyze me, I’m confronting it, laying it out there, and I’m going to overcome it. Some days will be better than others, so I hope to have more steps forward than I do backward. There will always be parts of me that will remain constant. I’m loyal. I fulfill my promises, I over-deliver where possible. I’ve been shooting at my best in the last couple of months. I treat people with fairness. I’m a strong person. I’m honest and communicate. I truly care and I still believe in the beauty of marriage. I’m not afraid to love deeply and with abandon, daring to risk it all, and one day it will be with the right man.

Why do I write all this so candidly? It is because I invite you to follow Shang Chen Photography as it weaves with the melody of my life. I also invite you to examine places in your life where you have fear, and to seize that fear and turn it into positive energy. I hope to be able to share my successes and uplift you in return.

Quincy’s Wollaston Beach is where Than proposed to Vy. It was unusually foggy that morning, so while I couldn’t get any blue sky shots, I was able to get very dramatic white backgrounds!

Vy’s family helped with her hair and makeup. It’s so perfectly flowing for the beach!

Than wanted to make sure he looked good in his photos. Than, even without my help, I think you did quite handsomely! This might be my favorite

Then off to Arnold Arboretum! I don’t want to show too many of these photos because I don’t want to spoil the look too much for the guests day of =)
