I tell photographers all the time, if you believe in your own product, you need to get portraits commissioned for yourself too, and get them done regularly. Nothing teaches you more about what you want out of photography than being in front of, not behind, the camera. My good friend (and former second shooter – can’t hang on to these ladies, they keep moving away!) Emily Ku, now a Las Vegas wedding photographer, took these of me when I was there for WPPI. Oh, and funny story about how I discovered Emily – she was a friend of a friend moving to the Boston area, and her original portfolio contained only photos of flowers! I know, how am I supposed to know her potential when I don’t see any portraits (which is what I require now for anyone applying to be my second shooter)? However, I saw something there, and I’m glad I did, because I think she is amazingly talented and has become an intimate friend who’s been there for me through thick and thin. That extra personal connection makes these portraits all the more dear (these are some weddings that we’ve worked on together – a Puerto Rico destination wedding, a Rhode Island naval station wedding, and a wedding in Devens).
Check them out! Which one is your favorite?

I’m currently scheduling meetups and chats for my spring break stay in Boston later this month. All my clients have responded by now and I’m opening it up to more people – fellow photographers, people who have never met me, and as always, my friends. Please email me!
